Zoviet France
":Zoviet*France: is an idiosyncratic collective of anonymous postindustrialists, dronologists, and pseudo-ethnomusicologists. Their investigations have taken them into fictional cultures where nothing is easily located and reality often slips into the hypnagogic. Having secluded themselves in Newcastle, England since their inception in 1982, :Zoviet*France: have developed a radical relationship with the cheap technologies of old-fashioned tape recorders, homemade acoustic instruments, primitive looping and sampling devices, and basic dub trickery. From these machines, the collective has crafted a distinctly unique vocabulary of postindustrial sonic hypnosis. Just as :Zoviet*France:'s sound was alchemic reconfigurations of inexpensive technologies, their vinyl packaging literally covered their sounds with aluminum, roofing shingles, and porcelain." source

a zillion thank you's for this knockout completely post.. you're the dreamer, million thanks.. is not too strong for this amazing bonanza of dazzling zoviet france.. herman kneeboots..
Excellent post. But disc 2 part 1 of Popular Soviet... has an error in track called (I think) "Ma Ja" hence my rar extractor shuts off and refuses to open the rest of the files after getting to that song. (I redownloaded it and tried again; same error.) So I guess I'll have to get that disc from somewhere else...

Nevermind that last post; all the discs opened fine. I guess the cutoff point between disc 2a and disc 2b was that track ("Ma-Ja"), so it had to jump over and open the next folder, which I did not yet have on my desktop.
On an unrelated note, hopefully someone will make some ZovietFrance/Boris mashups someday....

much thanks for this blog
Thank you. You have here provided a service to hundreds of unknown drone soldiers who seek small peace in sound.
Your commitment to posting this wonderful(l) music is a great service to all of us.
Excellent !Thank you soidemersol and thanks for the add (lastfm),
"popular soviet songs'link doesn't work anymore and "gesture" neither ,if somebody could got them please could you post once ? Thanks!
By the way ,I 'd like a post about "clair obscur" becuse I've got the cd"play" but not all the rest,please...thanks once again-.
Truly a mother lode. You've made my year. Thanks.
Eh yep! Thanks once again for repost!
Thank you very much indeed Torquemada or is it Soidemersol. Most of these releases are long deleted and had it not been for you we plebs would never get the chance to hear them. It would be better if they were all at 320 kbs but to have them at all is a joy. So thank you again.
In.Version came out in 1996 (not 1999)

There's been much drum-beating about grande synthe. But what is the reality?

:zoviet*france: live performance at The Cumberland Arms, Newcastle, last night: Ben and Mark - sheer ,genius! Downstairs the Uke strum-in leads us pints in hand to the portal through which we pass innocently negotiating the dark narrow stairs up to the door. Beyond this door nothing will ever seem the same, the mark of Cain, a strike through your name, the sound takes over as we sit at the back - Dave fetched the chairs - it's his knees you see - feeling uniquely low amongst the mainly male standing followers before us ; they are followers, disciples, because this is a rare event, no loaves or fishes yet unmistakably messianic - we look for a miracle and we're not disappointed - Dave stands for the first time - it's a penny whistle!! The wooden floor boards become the sound box for the lowest plumbed frequency depths of a marine trench where James Cameron would never dare to film. The amazing thing is that this is a live performance, Mark generates and manipulates with the wonders of e.g. Ableton Live, while Ben creates sounds from the whistle, the wooden clackers, the jew's harp while pre- prepared backing provides a web into which these improvised sounds are woven - precious rare threads in an ephemeral flying carpet - whoosh!!
Ben and Mark allow the wind to die down and that's it - it's over, to rapturous applause and so perfectly subtle, they stand by the door and thank us all as we leave, passing out through the portal where now guitars and mandolins strum the chords for California Dreaming, that's about as good as it gets!
Next performance at All Saints, 13th April
