NZ Series #2: Antony Milton, Stefan Neville and Clayton Noone

"Hi,

I wouldn't mind this all so much if maybe you could have an active link to my label webpage...
www.pseudoarcana.com
Some people still may be prepared to buy all these bloody cds I spend so much money and blood and sweat producing.
Haha.
Cheers bud,
-Antony Milton"

Antony,
These albums are all surely collector's items, and my intentions are to make all of them at least visible specially to latin americans (as I am) and to everyone else whose access to this great music is restricted in many means. I really appreciate your consideration. Keep up the great work!
obs: other labels included in this post are Last Visible Dog, Root Don Lonie for Cash and Pink Skulls.

This selection is intended to be in some way a pre-Pumice post. Pumice is Stefan Neville's main musical vector, and it will posted here shortly.

  1. 1. STEFAN NEVILLE
  2. 2. ANTONY MILTON
  3. 3. STEFAN NEVILLE + ANTONY MILTON
  4. 4. STEFAN NEVILLE + CLAYTON NOONE
  5. 5. CLAYTON NOONE + ANTONY MILTON
1. Stefan Neville

Albeit Pumice's discography is virtually impossible to measure, this album enters Stefan Neville 's portfolio as an unique recording. Firstly, this was not released as an umpteenth Pumice record, but as Stefan Neville, no monikers at all. With guests Antony Milton and Clayton Noone (not coincidently the ones covered below) and others, Do Not Destroy justifies its odd authoring adoption as it is maybe the first time Neville is not bending the concept of pop music. Instead, this is abstractly challenging, more process oriented than Pumice's aesthetical endeavors.

(2006) Stefan Neville - Do Not Destroy / 208 VBR

2. Antony Milton

All released by Milton's own Pseudoarcana label, these records show much of the work of this drone aficionado. Glory Fckn Sun is a superb free noise improv trio formed by Antony Milton, Ben Spiers and Simon O'Rorke. Vision Scorched gathers the abstraction of noise, the eerie slow paced layer morphing of dark ambient with psychedelic elements taken to extreme. Milton's guitar work in Vision Schorched and in solo attempts, specially in Guitar Has Strings, is much similar to Steven R. Smith and Loren Mazzacane Connors.

3. Stefan Neville + Antony Milton

This is Neville and Milton's ambient duo. Sunken is beautifully built by organ drones, analog feedback and homemade percussion. A marvelous debut album.

Both newzealanders entered the Jewelled Antler family with Claypipe. The label aesthetics of open air recording are adopted following the steps of fellows Glenn Donaldson, Loren Chasse and others. Live recorded minimal lofi folk with analog drones.

NZ Series #1: Armpit / CJA

Armpit and CJA are part of one of the most active experimental musician musical projects in New Zealand, Clayton Noone. His extreme lofi sonic explorations are hardly separable, considering all his different projects, varying from Dead C like feedback drone, to fellow Stefan Neville's outsider folk. CJA is mostly solo performed; other duo acts include Claypipe with Antony Milton, Thee Ideal Gus with Stefan Neville, Armpit with Sugar Jon, etc.

Moondog

"Moondog was the pseudonym of Louis Thomas Hardin (May 26, 1916September 8, 1999), a blind American composer, musician, cosmologist, poet, and inventor of several musical instruments. Although these achievements would have been considered extraordinary for any blind person, Moondog further removed himself from society through his decision to make his home on the streets of New York for approximately twenty of the thirty years he spent in the city. Only in the final decades of Moondog's life did the public begin to appreciate the extent of this man's talents, primarily because of his stubborn refusal to wear anything other than his own home-made clothes, all based on his own (sometimes too singular) interpretation of the Norse god Thor. Indeed, he was known for much of his life as 'The Viking of 6th Avenue'." source

Oval

"Although Oval are perhaps more well-known for how they make their music than for the music they actually make, the German experimental electronic trio have provided an intriguing update of some elements of avant-garde composition in combination with techniques of digital sound design, resulting in some of the most original, if somewhat challenging electronic music of the contemporary scene." source

"
Like many other electronic projects, Oval is difficult to describe. Markus Popp has had a hand in loads of interesting projects, from the minimalist/experimental Microstoria to the Jim O'Rourke and David Grubbs combo Gastr del Sol." source

Ekkehard Ehlers

In 'A Life Without Fear', Ekkehard Ehlers' abtract audio (be it digital or analog) manipulations are totally based on the total deconstruction of the Delta Blues structure. His subtle sonic layering and tweaking, in many ways similar to the work of Akira Rebelais, act in consonance to analog interventions in guitar and piano. The source amalgam, consisted of old samples, pre studio or live recordings, lead to a somehow musicological and aesthetical experience. Impressive.

Alastair Galbraith

Violinist Alastair Galbraith is probally one of the greatest figures in New Zeland's underground music scene in the last 20 years. Albeit worshiped by many (here - divided into parts 1, 2 and 3 - is a nice article written by Mats Gustafsson which illustrates an imense sense of admiration), his work remains relatively obscure. The depth of his impact in his homeland experimental music scenario is best characterized (by himself, in here) by the creation of the Xpressway label: a detachment of Flying Nun - NZ's biggest record label to date - to accomodate what the latter could not comprehend anymore. Its founder, Bruce Russell, was refered to in that given article as having had his crucial ideals from Galbraith's work per se, and obviously from his own sonic investigations in the mythical The Dead C.
In solo works, some of his most relevant releases are the beautiful avant folkish Mirrorwork, and the collected raw recordings of Seely Girn. His work is consistent throughout his solo career, and in many collaborations, most notably in the A Handful of Dust ensemble, a free noise improvisational group formed with Bruce Russell and others.

The Jewelled Antler Library

Anonymous said...

"could you remove these for now? we are reissuing the library later this year on Porter Records.

thanks,
jewelled antler people"

"Jewelled Antler is a loose affiliation of musical artists centred around the releases made or affiliated with two people, Glenn Donaldson and Loren Chasse of the Bay Area, San Francisco, USA. The artists combine an interest in recording spontaneously in natural settings that helps bring about an inherent connection between the music and the surroundings. Their musical inspirations are varied and range beyond folk music to music from India, experimental punk, 60s pop and much more.
In style the music moves in a range between folk acoustic and processed field recordings/collected sounds. Although it is perhaps over simplistic to say so, Glenn seems to bring the more folky element to the music with Loren bringing an interest in exploration and capture of natural sounds. The artists that are directly associated with the Jewelled Antler name have often evolved spontaneously around Glenn and Loren as they travel, meeting friends and fellow musicians.
Music is often recorded live, out doors and direct to tape using instruments that can be carried or powered by batteries, from stringed instruments, mobile keyboards to hand percussion. The structure will often appear improvisational although there is a song writing craft at its heart. Afterwards the music will be processed, edited, overlaid and interwoven with found sounds, fragments of speech, weather, gongs, digital noise, glitches and the like into a cohesive tapestry.
This combination brings together a new sound palette that is unpredictable, evolving and in its simplicity and directness, seems to continue and revitalise the original folk tradition. Acoustic music is often processed to be sound part of the tapestry alongside the other elements. Field recordings are an important element alongside new sounds gained by rubbing and manipulating such as leaves, stones and other natural components.
Although tagged ‘The Jewelled Antler Collective’ this is merely a useful name for artists working in a similar field who are connected with or sympathetic to the intentions which sit behind the music. At it’s heart it derives from the music of Glenn and Loren but extends through their musical friends in such countries as Finland and New Zealand working in similar areas." source
